5 Factors Affecting Lawyer Rates. The answer to the question of how much legal services cost (like the answer to most legal questions) is „it depends”. To find out how much lawyers cost, there are many different factors that affect prices. Here are 5 factors that determine how much lawyers cost:
- Invoicing method and pricing structure;
- The size and prestige of the law firm;
- Area of law or type of legal work performed;
- Lawyer’s level of experience;
- Where legal services are performed.
Billing method of lawyers
Billing in the legal industry is typically done in an hour. This means that most of the time lawyers charge an amount commensurate with the time they spend working. The hourly rate of a particular attorney will depend on the other 4 factors discussed below. Generally, hourly rates will range from PLN 150 to PLN 500 per hour. Lawyers may also charge a flat fee for certain legal services, such as company formation, wills or trademark applications. The good thing about flat fee charging is that the cost of lawyers does not vary based on the number of hours worked as the fee is fixed and often paid in advance.

It is worth remembering that according to Polish rules, a lawyer cannot collect his remuneration depending on the result obtained. That is, he cannot, for example, receive a percentage of the compensation. The parties can agree on a lump sum, and the money for winning the case is then paid as a bonus.
The size and prestige of the law firm
Typically, lawyers from larger, more reputable law firms cost more money than lawyers from smaller law firms or solo practitioners. Thus, the size and reputation of the law firm where the lawyer works is a very important factor to consider when hiring a lawyer and determining how much their legal services cost. If you’re dealing with a very complex case, it may be worth the extra cost of working with a high-end, more expensive law firm. To reduce attorney fees a bit, you can choose a small law firm.
Area of law or type of legal aid
Some types of legal services (e.g. legal assistance to frankers) are much more expensive than others, so the cost of lawyers will often directly depend on the type of work they do. For example, highly specialized areas of law, such as patent enforcement, generally cost more than day-to-day legal services. The area of law also often determines the type of billing structure used, whether it is an hourly fee or a flat fee.
Lawyer experience
The cost of lawyers is often directly correlated to how many years an attorney has been practicing law . Like fine wine, lawyers get better with age. A lawyer who has been practicing for 30 years will have extensive knowledge and a high level of expertise in one or more areas of law. Therefore, the services of this attorney are much more in demand than an associate who has barely graduated from law school. According to the law of supply and demand, it also costs much more to hire an experienced lawyer.
Place of performing legal services
The cost of lawyers will vary in different areas and parts of the country. Rural lawyers may have a smaller pool of clients, but also less competition from other lawyers. This means that lawyers from rural areas cost less on average than lawyers in large agglomerations, such as Warsaw, the Tri-City or Krakow.
How much legal services cost is a very important issue that most people will want to know before hiring one. However, there is no definite answer to this, so consider these five factors every time you find yourself in a situation where you need to hire a lawyer to get a better idea of lawyers’ costs.
It is worth remembering that the rate paid to an attorney depends on several factors. They consist of the nature of the case, as well as its complexity, i.e. the time that a given lawyer has to spend on solving it. A higher price for a legal service may be related to the complicated legal status. At the same time, such a price is also limited from above.
It may not exceed six times the minimum rate, and may not be higher than the value of the case itself. These issues are regulated by the Regulation of the Minister of Justice of 28 September 2002. It concerns attorneys’ fees and costs of unpaid legal assistance financed by the State Treasury.
The cost of legal assistance is related to the value of the case. If its value is not higher than PLN 1,500, such a cost will be approximately PLN 180. Other cases may cost slightly less (for example, deprivation of parental authority PLN 120) or slightly more (a case for establishing paternity PLN 240).
